Zado Music

Zado (previously named Zadovoljan) has produced three albums over the years, the most recent in 2018.

ZADOVOLJAN
1985

Soon after Zadovoljan was formed in 1980, Jan Volkoff joined the group and became its musical director. Members were added and we began learning more complex and varied songs and performing locally and in the San Francisco Bay area. We recorded 15 songs and produced a record album in 1985. The album was digitized in 2006 and a CD was produced. The singers included 14 women and 10 men as well as many talented local folk and jazz musicians.

2006

During the 1990s, Zadovoljan shortened its name to Zado, and in 2000 Teresa Stahl took over as musical director. The group changed members to include 12 women and 4 men and continued to perform locally for many varied groups and organizations. The group also recorded a number of songs at different settings. In 2006, a second CD was produced that included 22 songs.

ZADO
Journey of Friends
2018

In 2011, Jan Volkoff rejoined Zado and resumed as musical director. Zado membership continues to evolve over the years and currently includes 6 women and 3 men. The group continues to perform locally. In 2013, the group began recording again with a goal of producing a third album, completed in May 2018. We were fortunate to have as a guest singer Trudy Israel, Director of Nevenka from Los Angeles, who has inspired our singing and repertoire.

Album Notes
The album begins with a simple canon praising the spirit of life and the universe (Kol Ha’shamah) and ends with a prayer sung as a meditation (Otče Naš). In between the beginning and the ending, there are songs of love that include the pain of unrequited love (Trugnala E Moma Ruma, Oj Livado, Letyat Utki, Mojta Svadba, Dunayetska Voda) as well as the yearning and joy of fulfilled love (Trugnala E Malka Moma, Poidu Vyidu, Oj Dobriću, Crven Fesič, Vo Naše Selo Malovo, Pročula Se Moma Nedelja). There are also songs about the tragedies and harshness of war (Gorani, Zakasnila) and songs about children and home (Ozdolu Idu, Oj Dobriću, Waulking Song, Croatian Medley, Ergen Deda, Kak Za Lugom). Across all of the songs is an underlying sense that the human spirit overcomes adversity and continues to thrive during challenging times.
